The Space Battleship Yamato Complete Records Exhibition, planned and produced by Hideaki Anno to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the broadcast, is currently being held at Ebina Marui department store (Ebina City, Kanagawa Prefecture) through Sunday, July 26, 2026. Recently, a group of six officials from the U.S. Embassy in Japan visited the venue, led by Mr. Aaron Snipe, a senior U.S. State Department diplomat serving as the Deputy Chief of Mission.
This visit came about not only because of his deep affection for Space Battleship Yamato, but also because the series, broadcast in the U.S. during the 1970s and 80s, served as a gateway for his generation to learn about Japan. The enduring sentiment shared by fans in both Japan and the U.S. across generations paved the way for this visit. During their time at the venue, the group viewed the exhibits with great enthusiasm, showing a keen interest in the series’ worldview and production materials.
In fact, Mr. Snipe had previously visited the Shibuya venue in a private capacity. He examined the materials with great interest while receiving explanations from Mr. Tsuji of ATAC (Anime Tokusatsu Archive Centre). He recalled that when he first watched the show as an elementary school student, he was “amazed by the concept of the twin planets, Garmillas and Iscandar.”
He signed the message board and enjoyed the exhibition, including the merchandise corner.
Details of the visit are scheduled to be posted on the U.S. Embassy’s official social media channels, so please be sure to check them out on Twitter or Instagram.
July 21: US Embassy video
In a truly unexpected move, the U.S. Embassy posted a short video hosted by Aaron Snipe visiting the exhibition and giving his own testimonial of the original series–which will sound VERY familiar to Gen X fans who watched Star Blazers in real time.

Did you know that Space Battleship Yamato aired in the United States in 1979, and that the Yamato was known as the Argo? For many kids in America, this groundbreaking series was their very first touchpoint with Japan, and our Deputy Chief of Mission Aaron Snipe is no exception!
