Space Battleship Yamato III

Episodes 1-3: Destruction of the Solar System, November 11, 18, and 25

Humanity has one year to survive on Earth. Yamato departs to find a second Earth.

The dying sun

In 2205, a solar sightseeing ship carrying humanity’s dreams is destroyed along with many of its passengers by a missile that flies in from somewhere in outer space.

The Earth Defense Force investigation confirms that, in addition to the one that hit the tourist boat, two more projectiles headed toward the sun. Since then, an abnormal increase in nuclear fusion has begun inside the sun. If this continues, life on Earth will only be able to survive for one more year.

The surprised director immediately summons Susumu Kodai.

“I hereby appoint you as captain of Yamato.”

The mission is to find a planet suitable for human habitation. A summons is immediately issued to the crew. Familiar faces gather one after another: Yuki Mori, Shima, Sanada, and Analyzer. New crew members are also recruited. Among the 40 young men and women are Takeshi Ageha, scion of the Ageha Corporation, and Ryusuke Domon, who lost his parents on the solar sightseeing ship. However, Domon is dissatisfied with being assigned to the life support team. Kodai tries to reason with Domon, who is eager for revenge, by saying that no matter which team he’s on there are no unimportant missions in space travel.

Newcomer, Takeshi Ageha

At the same time, the Galman Empire’s fleet launches un attack on Earth’s front line in space. The defense force’s fight back, but their bases are blown up one after another. Anxiety grows in the defense force. With two crises now present, the launch of Yamato is urgently needed.

Meanwhile, on Earth, everyone is frantically working on Yamato’s maintenance and crew training. On that very day, Takeshi Ageha is suddenly relieved of his duties. Suspicious, Kodai asks Domon for an explanation. It seems that Takeshi is going to take over his father‘s company at his father‘s request, and his father is also the owner of Yamato. Kodai believes he seeks military power.

Takeshi goes to the hospital where his mother is hospitalized. Kodai readily accepts the situation, thinking this is the reason he obeyed the order to be relieved of duty. However, Takeshi’s mother orders him to return to Yamato.

“My mother wants me to live my life, without suppressing my feelings,” Takeshi says, his heart drawn to his ailing mother, as he returns to Yamato where Kodai and the others await

Yamato launch

There are only three days left until Yamato‘s departure. Every section is working diligently. However, only communications chief Aihara looks troubled. Unable to forget a nameless woman who gave him a wild chrysanthemum, he leaves the ship. But on the eve of departure, Kodai spots Aihara in a corner of the deck. He says to Kodai, “it’s not that woman I need to find. It’s a second Earth…”

Kodai introduces Aihara to the commanders’s granddaughter. She is the woman Aihara has fallen for. Leaving her behind on Earth, the crew now takes off into space on Yamato.
