Space Battleship Yamato, which was thought to have ended and scattered to the far reaches of space, is being revived! The five films from the original Space Battleship Yamato in 1977 to The Final Chapter 70mm version released in 1983, which gave young people across Japan a sense of romance and great emotion about space, will embark on a new journey in 1987 with Space Battleship Yamato, Birth Chapter. This was revealed by Producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki on the 11th, and characters such as Susumu Kodai, Yuki Mori, and even General Dessler will be revived.
Prior to Yamato‘s revival in Japan, it has also been decided that The Final Chapter 70mm version will be released in theaters in the United States next spring. To save Earth from destruction, Yamato, carrying its first captain Juzo Okita, performed a magnificent suicide attack and vanished into the depths of space. On Earth, Susumu Kodai and Yuki Mori were united. This was the final scene of The Final Chapter.
First appearing as an anime on on television in October 1974, Space Battleship Yamato, created by producer Nishizaki, was released as a feature film in 1977. The five films, up to The Final Chapter in 1983, attracted over 10 million children, giving them love, dreams, and inspiration. The distribution revenue for the five films was a staggering, ¥6.35 billion. Sales of records, publications, and character goods in the retail market are said to have reached ¥150 billion, and the video sold 100,000 copies, setting a new industry record.
The TV anime broadcast in 1978 and 1980 also achieved high average viewership ratings of 20%. It can truly be called an eternal masterpiece in anime history. Even today, there are over 100 fan clubs nationwide with approximately 30,000 members. In their hearts, the Yamato crew – Susumu Kodai, Yuki Mori, Shiro, Sanada, duke, Shima, and general Dessler – still live on.
Yamato, once destroyed, will be resurrected by Kodai and his crew. According to producer Nishizaki, this is a three-year plan. First next summer [1985], the animated film Starship, featuring a spaceship shaped like a medieval sailing ship soaring through the sky, will be released. Then, in 1986, Dessler’s War, Battleship Starsha, starring General Dessler, will be released. Dessler reigned as Yamato’s greatest enemy in the first series but ultimately confirmed his friendship with Kodai.
Then in 1987 comes Space Battleship Yamato, Birth Chapter. The bridge of Yamato, scattered throughout space, is gathered together, and Yamato is reborn. A new story then begins between the children of Kodai and Yuki, who were united in The Final Chapter, the children of Sanada, Shima’s younger brother, and General Dessler.
Regarding the revival, Nishizaki said, “personally, I can’t forget the majestic site of that tragic battleship that sank into the sea, flying through the sky, and I also have a strong attachment to the individual characters.” He continued, “Over the last ten years, Yamato made history and became a national story for children. I want to convey various forms of love, friendship, and dreams set against the backdrop of space to the next generation of children.”
Furthermore, before its revival in Japan, Yamato is expanding overseas. “I want American children who only know Walt Disney works to see it, “says Nishizaki. Next spring, a premiere screening will be held in theaters in New York and Los Angeles, inviting distributors and children, before a nationwide release is planned. It will be interesting to see how the flying battleship Yamato appears to blue-eyed teenagers.
