Thoughts after watching Episode 22

Episode 22 of Space Battleship Yamato remains one of the series’ finest, a masterpiece that has not lost its luster even after half a century. To put it simply, the true value of this episode lies not in the spectacular combat, but in the dignity of hands-on technical work and the clash between professionals shouldering heavy responsibilities.
I analyze this episode from the perspective of a former field engineer who spent 32 years dedicated to the maintenance and safety of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) machinery.
Reading this article will reveal the following three points:
• Why Shiro Sanada’s missile-disassembly scene still feels so realistic today
• How the resolve of the enemy commander, Domel, mirrors the situation of modern middle managers
• The power of the script: how the single phrase “Glory to Gamilas and Earth” created a resonance that has lasted half a century
Why the Enemy General Domel resonates with Middle Managers
Realizing defeat following a desperate missile counterattack, Domel closes in on Yamato‘s third bridge, prepared for a suicide mission, and confronts Captain Okita via the communication screen.
This is where the true human drama unfolds. While Okita urges him to stand down and avoid needless casualties, Domel refuses to retreat, declaring that the fate of Gamilas rests on his battle. It is a scene where their respective prides clash, carrying a weight that transcends the action of the battle itself.
When I was an active manager, Domel’s face didn’t look like that of a stranger to me. His figure, fighting on the front lines while weighing absolute orders from superiors against the lives of his subordinates and the survival of his homeland, perfectly mirrors the situation of middle managers and leaders in modern corporations who must endure immense pressure. As someone who has served as a manager on the front lines, caught between superiors and subordinates, I have spent many nights unable to retreat even when I wanted to. Domel’s expression in that scene reveals precisely that kind of resolve.
Domel’s Position and the Structure of Middle Management
• Imposed from above
Absolute orders from high command / The survival of the homeland
• Shouldered from below
The lives of subordinates / Morale on the front lines
• Left to the individual
The resolve to stand firm when retreat is not an option
This is not merely a battle between good and evil. It is a clash between professionals, each shouldering responsibilities they cannot compromise on, which is precisely why it continues to resonate deeply with adults, transcending the passage of time.
“Glory to Gamilas and Earth”, Domel’s final words, remembered for half a century
In his final moments, Domel takes pride in having fought against a brilliant commander and offers a tribute, wishing glory upon his enemy, Earth.
These words, overflowing with profound respect for others, leave a quiet, lingering impression, serving as a message about the sanctity of life embedded within the story. I remain deeply impressed by the screenwriting prowess that allows a general, who meets his end while praising his enemy, to embody that scenario with just a single, quiet remark, avoiding any hint of preachiness.
While the episode depicts a clash of overwhelming tactical maneuvers, at its core lies the dignity of human craftsmanship and the weight of responsibility one bears. This is why I, a former field engineer, consider Episode 22 a masterpiece. The very fact that an anime from that era could create a work that resonates so deeply with those who know the realities of the workplace fills me with a sense of solemn respect.
Even now, long after leaving the front lines of the job, Domel’s final words remain etched in my mind. The grace with which he met his end, praising his foe. The way he lived, leaving something behind for others as he departed. What are you leaving behind for others right now? Whether at work, at home, or anywhere else in life, that question quietly remains with us.
Synopsis: The Battle of the Rainbow Star Cluster and the Final 30 Seconds of the Great Commander Domel
Seven Days Hence, at the Rainbow Star Cluster; A Challenge from Domel
A transmission arrives at Yamato‘s bridge. The sender is Domel, the Commander-in-Chief of the Gamilas Empire’s Galactic Operations, a brilliant strategist who has repeatedly stood in Yamato‘s path to block its advance. It is a formal challenge to a decisive battle.
“To the Captain of Yamato: The time has come for us to settle the score. Just as you seek Iscandar to save Earth, we of Gamilas also desire Earth. If you are determined to reach Iscandar, you must defeat my forces in a head-on confrontation. I hereby propose a decisive battle to take place in seven days’ time at the Rainbow Star Cluster.”
It marks the beginning of an inescapable battle, one where pride and national honor hang in the balance. Yamato Captain Juzo Okita resolves to accept this bold challenge.
The “Rainbow Star Cluster”, the battlefield where their fates will be decided, is an extremely dangerous and unpredictable region of space. Swirling with unique cosmic currents and interstellar matter, it severely restricts both visibility and radar capabilities.

Domel’s Three-Stage Tactic: Stripping Away the Air Defense Net and Leaping Through Space
While Yamato advances under a state of high alert, the Gamilas carrier fleet led by Domel lies in silent ambush deep within a dark nebula occupying a corner of the cluster, waiting in the void, 30,000 kilometers away, to completely evade Yamato‘s radar net.
Despite possessing overwhelming military might, they harbor no arrogance. Instead, there is only cold, calculated precision aimed at ensuring Yamato‘s destruction.
Domel’s first arrow is loosed. A Gamilas fighter squadron launches a surprise attack on Yamato. Yamato immediately moves to combat stations and launches its fighter squadron, the Cosmo Zeros and Black Tigers, to intercept the enemy.
However, this is precisely the trap Domel has set. The Gamilas fighter squadrons avoid direct engagement, skillfully luring Yamato‘s fighters into a sector of space far from their mothership. By the time Susumu Kodai and his pilots realize it is a ruse and begin a full-speed return to Yamato, it is already too late.
With its fighter squadrons drawn away, Yamato‘s air defense network is left vulnerable. Seizing this opening, Domel unleashes his second strike: the activation of his secret weapon, the “Instantaneous Matter Transporter.” A squadron of dive bombers enters a special beam field and instantly leaps through space. Suddenly, a massive enemy formation materializes directly above the defenseless Yamato.
Domel’s Three-Stage Tactic
• First Strike
Launch a fighter raid to lure Yamato‘s carrier-based squadrons far away from their mothership.
• Second Strike
Use the “Instantaneous Matter Transporter” to instantly teleport a dive-bomber squadron directly above Yamato.
• Third Strike
Fire a “Drill Missile” from a heavy bomber directly into Yamato‘s Wave-Motion Gun muzzle.
A drill missile lodges in the Wave-Motion Gun muzzle, 15 minutes remaining
Chaos erupts aboard Yamato as a fierce bombardment suddenly rains down from above. Although the ship fights back desperately with anti-aircraft fire, it is impossible to fully repel the waves of enemy attacks while its own aircraft are still inbound.
Amidst this turmoil, a massive heavy bomber launches a special weapon aimed directly at Yamato: a “drill missile” designed to strike the muzzle of the ship’s Wave-Motion Gun, a weapon that is simultaneously its greatest strength and its most critical vulnerability.
With a dull metallic clang, the giant drill missile drives deep into the muzzle of the Wave-Motion Gun at Yamato‘s bow. Emitting an eerie whirring sound, the warhead slowly but surely bores its way toward the ship’s interior. If it reaches the ship’s vital core and detonates, Yamato will be blown to smithereens in an instant.
With the Wave-Motion Gun physically blocked, Yamato has lost its most powerful offensive weapon. Furthermore, the intense attack has destroyed its radar, leaving the crew unable to even pinpoint the enemy’s location. Only 15 minutes remain before the drill missile’s timer triggers the explosion. Yamato falls completely silent, left utterly helpless before the enemy commander, Domel.
Four Crushing Blows Facing Yamato
• Primary Weaponry
The Wave-Motion Gun is physically disabled by a drill missile.
• Sensor Capabilities
Radar destruction renders the enemy’s position undetectable.
• Air Defense
Carrier-based squadrons are cut off at a distance, with no choice but to await their return.
• Time Remaining
Only 15 minutes until detonation.
Shiro Sanada’s flash of insight: “Reverse the polarity”, leading the Domel Fleet to self-destruction
As a sense of urgency grips the ship, Chief Engineer Sanada, head of the engineering team, and the analysis robot Analyzer infiltrate the missile itself, undertaking a perilous attempt to dismantle it. Amidst a tangle of complex wiring, they work under extreme tension where a single procedural error could trigger an immediate, massive explosion. The deadline is fast approaching.
Meanwhile, having confirmed Yamato‘s total silence, Domel is convinced of victory. He leads his entire fleet in a final approach to the ship. Just as the massive Gamilas fleet prepares to unleash a simultaneous barrage, a breakthrough occurs.
Sanada’s Flash of Insight:
“This is it… I’ve got it! If I just reverse the setting on this…”
Sanada’s tenacity and sudden inspiration save Yamato from the brink of despair. He succeeds in rewiring the mechanism to reverse the missile’s propulsion circuit.
With its rotation reversed, the drill missile backs away from Yamato‘s Wave-Motion Gun muzzle and is pushed back out into open space. It then hurtles straight into the midst of Domel’s carrier fleet, which has been closing in tight formation to deliver its final blow. Before the eyes of the stunned Gamilas soldiers, the drill missile reaches its time limit and detonates in a colossal explosion.
The sheer destructive power of the blast triggers a chain reaction among Domel’s elite carrier fleet, reducing the ships to cosmic dust one after another. The ships that had tormented Yamato are instantly annihilated by the very weapon they launched themselves.
A suicide ship closes in on the Third Bridge; the final exchange between Okita and Domel
Having lost his main fleet, only the disc-shaped command ship carrying Domel remains. Although Goer urges a retreat, Domel’s gaze is filled with unwavering resolve.
“The outcome has not yet been decided. The moment Gamilas falls, Yamato shall fall with it. Full speed ahead, charge straight at Yamato!”
Determined to sink Yamato by any means necessary, Domel pilots his remaining disc-shaped ship to close the distance, forcing his way alongside Yamato’s third bridge. With his hand on the switch for the self-destruct mechanism, he sets the countdown to detonation at a mere thirty seconds.
At that moment, Domel appears on Yamato’s main screen, establishing a direct line of communication. Two great commanders stand face-to-face across the void. There is no hatred between enemy and ally here. Instead, there is a profound mutual respect, acknowledging the strategic brilliance and courage of an adversary who has fought with everything they had.
The Final Dialogue Between Two Great Commanders:
“Captain Okita. I offer my heartfelt respect for your courage, your decisiveness, and your wisdom.”
Okita speaks quietly in return. “Commander Domel. We have both fought for the sake of our respective worlds. But I do not wish for any further loss of life. Let us proceed to Iscandar.”
“That I cannot do. Just as you fight to save Earth, the fate of Gamilas rests upon my battle. I would sooner lay down my own life than allow Yamato to reach Iscandar. And yet, Captain Okita…I consider it an honor to have met a warrior such as yourself.”
Resolved to take Yamato with him at the cost of his own life, Domel orders his subordinates to evacuate to the upper decks and shouts his final words:
“Glory to the Gamilas Empire, and to the great Earth!”
Amidst a blinding flash, Domel’s ship detonates violently beneath the hull of Yamato. A distinguished commander who sacrificed himself for his convictions and loyalty to his homeland, he meets his end in space with his pride intact.
“Their spirits will become the strength for Earth’s tomorrow”
Yamato is violently shaken by the shockwave of the massive explosion. Yet, thanks to its robust armor and the crew’s desperate damage-control efforts, it miraculously escapes a fatal blow.
The crew is left speechless after witnessing the spectacular, tragic conclusion of Domel’s suicide attack. Though an enemy, Domel had upheld the pride of a soldier to the very end. Captain Okita quietly closes his eyes, reflecting on all the brave warriors who risked their lives for the sake of Earth.
“Their spirits will live on within us, becoming the strength for Earth’s tomorrow. We shall never forget you.”
Yamato has successfully survived the deadly gauntlet of the Rainbow Star Cluster. Having risen once more from the depths of despair into which it was cast, the ship, though heavily damaged, fixes its gaze straight upon its objective. Iscandar is close at hand now.
Hurry, Yamato. A dying Earth awaits your return.
