Star Blazers Episode 30 script

This script was donated by Toy Stable, in honor of their friend Albert Penello.

This opening narration was written to cover recap scenes that appeared in Yamato 2, but were cut from Star Blazers (probably to shorten the runtime). The episode began with the scene on the next page.

In General Stone’s third line on this page, “Those fools” was cut.

The Commander’s last line, “There’s still time to stop them,” is in parentheses to indicate that it was a possible cut. And, yes, it was cut.

The Japanese name plate to be cut was a literal name plate in this case. It’s a sign saying “Shima” above the sliding door that Jordy Venture runs through when he gets home.

The second half of Wildstar’s line (at 109) has a directive that reads “VO – Filter.” VO stands for “Voice Over,” and the filter is an audio treatment to differentiate it from a spoken line.

The note about cutting a shot on this page refers to this scene:

It’s an exterior shot in which the ship pulls in its multi-stage gangway. Most of this sequence was lifted directly from Farewell to Yamato, but the transfer from 35mm movie film to 16mm TV film lost a lot of resolution. The movie version of the shot is shown above right for comparison. Because the contrast was so low in the 16mm version, it was decided to cut this shot from Star Blazers.

In Sandor’s second line on this page (at 135) a long pause is indicated. The “OC” reference means “Off Camera” since we cut away from Sandor for a few scenes.

The note about cutting a scene due to contrast problems was an even bigger issue here than on the previous page, affecting three shots in a row. Since the ship is now underwater, the exterior action is even harder to make out in the 16mm TV transfer.

Again, these shots were reused from Farewell to Yamato; a clamp pulls away from the ship’s hull…

…another clamp does the same on the opposite side…

…then the entire ship gains bouyancy and tilts to the side. In all three cases, the 16mm TV transfer is shown on the left and the original 35mm shots are at the right. The degradation is significant. And thus, all three shots were cut from Star Blazers.

The second line on this page, “They’re cruising on the sea bottom at 27 knots,” was cut.

In Venture’s countdown, the numbers 7, 6 and 1 are missing from the script, but are present in the episode.

At the top of the next page (below) there’s a note to “cut title.” This refers to a master shot of the battle satellite with a Japanese caption to label it. All frames containing the caption were cut.
