Because I have kindness, I can show compassion to others.”

Here we feature a special conversation between Daisuke Ono and Makoto Furukawa, the two popular voice actors who face off against each other in the final chapter. They discussed the conflicts and struggles of the human heart, and the passionate feelings they poured into the work, reflecting on their long journey so far.

“It’s really tough to have such terrible things happen to me in every story,” Ono said. “This work is full of suffering. To this, Director Fukui laughed and said, ‘But the story wouldn’t move forward if he didn’t suffer’.”

Director Fukui said that he had decided on Furukawa for the role of Alphon ever since he saw him play Brick Teclato in Mobile Suit Gundam NT. He gave him his seal of approval, saying, “I can’t imagine anyone else voicing the character.”

The pressure unique to remakes and the determination to create something new

The remake series began with Space Battleship Yamato 2199, which was screened in theaters in 2012. Daisuke Ono, the voice actor who took on the role of Susumu Kodai in this work, said he felt “a great responsibility.”

“More than the greatness of Yamato as recorded in the numbers and records, there was pressure from those around me. They were asking, ‘Are you Kodai? Can you do it?’ They said things like, ‘Do your best,’ and ‘We have high expectations for you.’ They gave me all sorts of encouraging words.”

Mr. Ono approached the task with the determination to “create a new Yamato from here.”

“First of all, Kodai’s character is different from the original. There are more women in the crew, and in many ways, you can feel the ambition to create a Yamato that is relevant to the present day. That made the weight of Yamato‘s history a little lighter. That will be felt by not only people who have loved Yamato for a long time, but also those who are encountering it for the first time. Even when the next generation looks at it, we create works that will make your heart tremble. The feeling that we will create is shared by everyone, even the next generation that looks at it.”

14 years have passed since then. The remake has finally reached the final chapter of REBEL 3199. Makoto Furukawa, who plays Alphon, apparently felt the same pressure as Ono.

“I can really relate to what Ono-san said. After I got the role, I rewatched the original work and it felt even more profound.”

What dispelled that was a new story development that differs from the original, and the words of Director Fukui.

“He would explain things like, ‘Alphon is this kind of person, and this is his role in this instance…’ before each voice recording session. I would also ask him for advice on what Alphon thinks of Yuki, and how I should approach my performance. Hearing his answers boosted my enthusiasm rather than pressured me, and I was able to enjoy each session.”

Kodai and Alphon’s feelings toward a woman named Yuki Mori

The final chapter has finally arrived. Reflecting on their journey, the two passionately discussed what Yuki Mori means to each of them: Kodai and Alphon. For Kodai, a harsh turn of events awaited him where everything he believed in was shaken, and he lost the person he trusted most.

Among all the scenes, the one that remains most memorable for Ono is where he calls out Sasha’s name.

“Up until now, whenever Kodai called out to someone, it was almost always Yuki. But in this series, it’s almost always Sasha. Especially that final scream in chapter 7. It was really painful to perform.”

Meanwhile, as the story progressed, Alphon transformed from a Dezarian into a human being.

“At first, Alphon doesn’t really understand his own feelings toward Yuki. He sees the relationship between her and Kodai and wants to know more. He wonders if it might be jealousy. I think he’s a character whose emotions gradually develop.”

For Kodai, Alphon was a clear enemy at the beginning of the story. However, that impression changed as the story progressed.

“At first, I completely viewed him as an enemy. He was my rival in love, and also a mysterious and unsettling presence. But gradually, I began to see that there was something more to him. The fact that Yuki was there made me realize that Alphon wasn’t just a mechanical Dezarium or a mere human, and my perspective slowly began to change.”

Furukawa also says that for Alphon, Kodai was not simply a love rival.

“I think Alphon first became interested in Kodai through Yuki. He wondered what kind of person this woman he picked up was, someone he fell in love with at first sight. Someone he wanted to see even after death. That’s where his interest in Kodai began. He realized that love is what allows you to trust someone that much. Kindness is what allows you to show compassion to others. I think he realized that people aren’t something you can measure so easily.”

Both of them agree on how significant Yuki’s presence is.

“This time, Yuki was just too strong. She never broke, never gave up. She continued to live on with dignity. I think we were able to compete with it and grow as a result,” said Ono.

“No matter how much Alphon begs for information, Yuki never gives in,” said Furukawa. “On the contrary, she tries to somehow get the information back to Yamato. But at the same time, she shows kindness and compassion to us as well. Throughout the voice recording, I kept thinking, there’s no way we can win against her.”

Two people who meet as enemies learn “what it means to be human” through the existence of Yuki.

“I think this work is very relevant to the present age,” said Ono. “Information manipulation and peer pressure. With the development of social media, it has become a world where it can generate great power. AI can also be scary if it is used incorrectly. What lies beyond that is the horror of the human heart, which can hurt people and lead to war. Yamato is science fiction, but it can be perceived as our own story. Having finished performing, I truly feel that this is the Yamato of the Reiwa era.”

Kodai, Alphon, and Yuki. We hope you will go to the theater to witness where their respective feelings lead them.

Return to previous article

[1

post-45468","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
