Watch it here.

Translated by Anton Mei Brandt

This is an extremely dense trailer with a lot of big, unconnected moments swirling together. Aside from the battles, it appears the plot is moving in directions both familiar and new. Kodai and older Sasha’s proper first meeting is teased throughout, this time taking place on Galman instead of on Yamato‘s deck. A fitting choice, given the subject matter of Galman’s moon.

After a soft opening, the music is dominated by a strident version of the Bolar theme, not heard since the glory days of Yamato III.

Standing in his new throne room at night, looking up at Galman’s blue moon, Dessler speaks with Sasha, the daughter of the late Starsha Iscandar. After a brief exchange, she runs off.

Abelt Dessler: I want you to become a person worthy of your mother’s name…as the last royal of Iscandar.

Sasha: I can’t… I don’t have the right to that.

For fans of the original saga, this moment is worth its weight in gold. Dessler bonding with Starsha’s daughter, whom he never had the chance to meet in Be Forever Yamato during his voyage to find Galman? It’s a dream scenario! Sadly, because our Abelt struggles to bare his heart, Sasha’s response is understandably indecisive. What’s likely happening here is Abelt offering (read: begging) Sasha to become an icon of worship for the people of Galman, who like their Garmillan brothers have seemingly worshipped Iscandar royalty since last they came to visit, but likely under another name: Shalbart. (Or possibly Uralia).

As for the blue moon, it’s a carryover from Yamato III, first seen in 2205, a lasting reminder of how and why the people of Galman were chosen to be Iscandar’s war-faring slaves a millennia ago. In Yamato III, this moon was named “Starsha,” in the late Queen’s honor. It was revealed to Kodai and Yuki in a scene reminiscent of this one, in the throne room. I doubt there’s any actual open air connecting Dessler’s throne to the elements, so this more likely being a projected outlook from cameras outside the palace. Oh, and we also see the faint outline of what could be Abelt’s concealed conference table. Neat.

Quick insert shots of Yamanami and Berger, repeated from the second teaser.

Sasha looks up from the surface of Galman at sunset. Yamato rises to the defense of Galman, accompanied by Garmillas ships.

Ram’s voice: Rest assured, the great land of Barze [or] Berth will be defended to the very end.”

Left: Alphon meanwhile is making an explosive exit from the Prime Minister’s residence on Earth, a moment undoubtedly preceding his injuries seen later. My working theory is that Fleur was brought there by her “father” (Alphon’s old friend Maxim), and rather than go alone, she invited her new friend Tsubasa. How sweet.

Right: A massive firefight over Galman with the Garmillas and Bolar fleets going head to head.

Ram bears witness to his comrades departing Planet Berth, readying himself for the impending battle with Galman-Garmillas.

Left: The Bolar fleet accelerates forward. Rajendora is the red one. In the Star Blazers version of Yamato III, it was called the Legendra. “Rajendora” is a word that goes back to the early days of story development; it was the original name for “Gamilas.”

Ram’s voice: Target: Planet Galman!

Right: Yamato splashes down in the sea of Galman and we get the chapter title: Pale Blue Maiden/Sasha.

Sasha has her photo taken by (presumably) Miyako.

Lt. Why the enthusiasm? Because Yamato’s likely taking a day off for once.

Galman-Garmillas unveils their new Reflection Satellite Laser defense system.

This is a neat inclusion, given its appearance at Barnard in Yamato III. The in-universe reasoning behind its resurrection is solid too. In 2199, this system was never built for warfare, instead intended as a cost-effective measure for the understaffed Pluto force to bomb Earth by supercharging passing asteroids. In 2202, Gatlantis used Garmillan science slaves to create a more flexible system, with its primary gun attached to a ground-type Medaluza-class ship, though this messed with its calibrations.

In 2205, after Frakken and his space submarines exploited the icy waters of Galman as a staging ground to launch a surprise attack on the Bolars, Dessler likely broached the subject of bringing back this system as a defensive option, having finally seen its merits in person. Now, the year is 2207, and this system (which needs targets to remain more—or—less moving along predictable paths) has been brought back as a desperate measure. Cool.

Left: a Bolar battleship takes it right up the middle.

Curiously enough, the Bolar ships don’t seem to be fired at by this reflection satellite system. The beam is aggressively red, as opposed to pink. Could this be a sneak attack from Ranbel, to cause misunderstandings between Dessler and the Bolar during a time of careful negotiations? Perhaps. Or it’s a Bolar beam being deflected by the Satellite system, who knows!

Right: Alphon finishes his description of Sasha.

Alphon: The knot of the wheel of time.

Alphon’s comment confirms many of our suspicions. Sasha’s existence as a key toward bridging the past and the future is undeniable, hence why the Dezarium chose to so rapidly kidnap her as a child. Perhaps this older Sasha actually is from the future?

Left: Sasha speaks decisively. Special focus is given to her glimmering eyes, a defining aspect of her design.

Sasha: There are no shortcuts in life. What you choose to seize is something you can decide for yourself.

Right: As we hear this line, we see Sasha run away from Kodai in an emotional moment. The presence of the steel bars invokes a moment from Be Forever: Sasha expressing her inferiority complex when measured against Yuki, a subject likely to be shifted to her mother Starsha in 3199.

In the original work, ‘Mio’ revealed her identity as Sasha on Yamato’s deck, while Kodai revealed that his brother (her father) has been killed on Earth. “I’ll take his place for you,” he swears, embracing a crying Sasha. The new teaser implies that not two, but perhaps three defining moments with Sasha will take up the brunt of this scene, ending with her running off crying as opposed to embracing Susumu. That was the last moment they shared in the same place in Be Forever.

Right: Yamato departs from Galman, aided by UX-01 space submarines at each side, with Frakken’s next generation sub following behind.

The crew’s assisted departure from Galman is something they’ll likely earn after saving the planet from the Bolar Proton Missile. Having staved off calamity, Dessler lends the space submarines to aid Yamato on its journey through dense interstellar matter leading to the center of the universe, which is where Chapter 4 could possibly end.

Sasha and Kodai on Yamato‘s bridge, both repeated from the second teaser.

Left: Sasha in a moment of shock. We hear Domon speak as he tries to rouse Kodai’s spirit.

Domon’s voice: Right now, the only one who can create trust and connect hearts with Sasha, is you, Kodai-san…

Following his own footsteps from 2205, Domon continues to be the best wingman Kodai never asked for. The troublesome and thorny relationship shared between Uncle Susumu and Niece Sasha might be resolved within this chapter, with Kodai opting to trust her judgment even at the risk of losing her life. This is the judgment he makes at the end of Be Forever, with Sanada urging him to not let Sasha’s sacrifice go to waste, and to fire the WMG at her and Dezarium’s core.

Left: Kodai takes aim at something from the combat seat on the first bridge (which Domon previously refused to give up).

Right: Another Dezarium Capture Net opens wide to consume the ship. These two scenes may not necessarily be connected, since deceptive editing is a hallmark of these trailers.

Left: Domon and Kodai react to something on the first bridge. Hints in previous chapters about the necessity for Dezarium to gatekeep their technology might reach its Rubicon at this moment, with Frakken taking advantage of the Capture Net’s ability to track the last-generation UX-01 by attaching two of them to Yamato, ensuring they’ll be spotted but not destroyed.

Ranbel wants Yamato alive, so this is the best way to drag him out into the open.
