Convenience stores in Japan truly live up to their name. You can get a meal there, pay your utility bills there, and even buy movie tickets there. Starting on this day (through the end of the month), fans could buy their Yamato 2205<\/em> movie tickets from a Loppi vending machine and earn themselves a pair of metal magnets (about 3″ x 2″) featuring production art of Dessler and Starsha. The finished products would be picked up at the same convenience store locations from December 9, a pretty good way of getting customers back in the store.<\/p>\n

The luckiest fans on Earth got to see Yamato 2205<\/em> Part 1 two weeks ahead of everyone else at this special screening that included stage greetings from cast and crew. Attendees showered the film with praise on Twitter afterward, but gave away no details.<\/p>\n

Those who bought tickets through official sources got two free gifts for their effort; a tote bag and a reproduction of the mysterious “press sheet” art that was tipped in the fan club magazine but never actually distributed until now.<\/p>\n

Interview text<\/h3>\n

Interviewer:<\/em><\/span> First of all, please tell us about your enthusiasm for the new work.<\/p>\n

Yasuda:<\/em><\/span> I’m from the generation that hadn’t seen the old series, but this time there are many crew members who are very familiar to me. I wanted to work on the new series with a fresh mind. I heard there was a reason they wanted a director who doesn’t know Yamato<\/em>, so I accepted the responsibility.<\/p>\n

Yamato<\/em> was an original experience for the generation a little older than myself, and the pressure is great, but it also has a lot to offer. The staff who supported the past series is also participating in this project. We’re making this film with their help as well.<\/p>\n

Fukui:<\/em><\/span> If we were going to do The New Voyage<\/em> after completing the major theme of Yamato<\/em> in 2202<\/em>, I wanted to create a Taiga [classic] drama that is more conscious of continuity. I had this in mind at the moment I received the offer. I felt like, “I have no choice but to do it!”<\/p>\n

Interviewer:<\/em><\/span> In the case of Yamato 2202<\/em>, it was very easy to understand that it was a remake of Farewell to Yamato<\/em>. What kind of work will Yamato 2205<\/em> be, then?<\/p>\n

Fukui:<\/em><\/span> It’s definitely The New Voyage<\/em>. For a while after it starts, you may wonder what is “New Voyage” about it. But after five minutes, you’ll understand. After another five minutes, you’ll be like, “What’s going on with this?” And so on. In the midst of that repetition, you can look forward to where we’ll end up. That’s the point.<\/p>\n

Yasuda:<\/em><\/span> For those who don’t know Yamato<\/em>, I think you’ll enjoy the growth of the new young crew. The addition of new crew members to the base of The New Voyage<\/em> is an element that adds a different emotional flow to the history of Yamato<\/em> and the history of Kodai and Yuki. I think that even those who know the old work will be able to enjoy it with a fresh feeling.<\/p>\n

Fukui:<\/em><\/span> After working through 2202<\/em>, I felt again that Yamato<\/em> is the story of a man named Susumu Kodai. So I had to make it fit into his story. On the other hand, I mentioned “Taiga drama tailoring.” After The New Voyage, Space Battleship Yamato<\/em> also had a moment when I think it was aiming for a “Taiga drama,” as if depicting a story over a period of 10 to 20 years, with the crew members changing.<\/p>\n

So this time, 2205<\/em> is the story of Susumu Kodai, a human being. It is a Taiga drama and new characters will also come in. It was a test to see if I could balance these two elements. I feel that the response has been very good.<\/p>\n

Interviewer:<\/em><\/span> Another big thing is that the CG of Yamato<\/em> has changed, hasn’t it?<\/p>\n

Fukui:<\/em><\/span> Yes, that was Director Yasuda’s focus.<\/p>\n

Yasuda:<\/em><\/span> Originally, the old works were hand-drawn, and in the past remake series, Yamato<\/em>‘s CG had a cel-look to it. This is partly a matter of taste, but since it’s a large battleship, I want it to look large. However, I didn’t want it to look too realistic and uncomfortable, so I tried to keep a good balance between the two. I tried to create a special effect (brush processing) on the cel image.<\/p>\n

Fukui:<\/em><\/span> Even in the original, the way Yamato<\/em> was drawn changed with the heavy use of backgrounds in Be Forever<\/em>. So I thought it would be nice to look at Yamato<\/em> in a new way this time.<\/p>\n

Interviewer:<\/em><\/span> What do you think is the highlight of this film?<\/p>\n

Fukui:<\/em><\/span> I’m glad Mr. Yasuda directed this film and that he wasn’t a fan of the original Yamato<\/em>. He’s able to keep a little distance and create his work objectively. I’m able to create my work in a very flat way. As Yamato<\/em>‘s new look symbolizes, it’s a bit more mature than the previous two works. The number of young people has increased, so the atmosphere is fresh, but I think it’s also something that adults can see and understand.<\/p>\n

Yasuda:<\/em><\/span> If Yamato<\/em> was a drama of two generations (Okita’s generation and Kodai’s generation), it’s now a drama of three generations with the newcomers. They’re lively but worried, and how they overcome their difficulties is a major highlight of the story. Also, the fighter planes will be a big focus of attention. I think you’ll be pleased with the Cosmo Tiger II scenes.<\/p>\n

Fukui:<\/em><\/span> This time, The New Voyage<\/em> inherits the flow, passion, and theme of Farewell to Yamato<\/em>. I think this is the Yamato<\/em> we originally wanted to see 40-odd years ago, and you can look forward to it.<\/p>\n

Yasuda:<\/em><\/span> There are many new elements and new developments, but it has the same title as the old film. If the song is played here, the audience will be excited. I’d like everyone to keep these points in mind. The work is both nostalgic and new at the same time. I hope that those who know Yamato<\/em> and those who are new to the work will all look forward to it.<\/p>\n

Chapter 1 Theater goods<\/h3>\n

The theater products had less variety than we\u2019ve seen in the past, giving us an indication of what kind of merch continues to sell. It\u2019s always a guessing game on the part of the manufacturers, but many items vanished from shelves as the weeks continued, so at least some guesses were correct.<\/p>\n

It was notable that both of the new calendars only went through June 2022. That almost certainly means additional calendars will pick up from there in the Part 2 collection. It\u2019s very rare for one of these to offer a different image every month (as opposed to a single image for two months), so this is a welcome change.<\/p>\n

Another interesting point is that the apparel collaboration between 2202<\/em> and Under Armour has expired, and another company called Descente has stepped in with some very cool activewear.<\/p>\n

Chapter 1 theater handouts<\/h3>\n

Chapter 1 played for four weeks in theaters. On the first day of each week (Saturday), every ticket holder received a free set of animation drawings in a facsimile production folder. Naturally, collectors were drawn back for the next set each week.<\/p>\n

Yokosuka Sea Anime Carnival<\/h3>\n

Originally scheduled for July, this event got knocked off the calendar by Covid and finally re-emerged from the 13th to the 28th. Set on board the museum Battleship Mikasa,<\/em> it featured displays from three disparate anime shows, including Yamato 2205<\/em>.<\/p>\n

To keep fans busy, a stamp rally was arranged with some local merchants in Yokosuka. Players were given cards to fill up with stamps obtained by spending a minimum of 500 yen. Five stamps qualified you to receive prizes. The Yamato<\/em> prize was a pair of clear bookmarks.<\/p>\n

But most of the effort went into the shipboard displays, which were photographed extensively by visitors.

The number of Chapter 2 products sold in theater gift shops was noticeably smaller than previous outings, likely due to reduced theater traffic in general. They also sold out quicker with many items disappearing in the first week, especially in the apparel category.<\/p>\n
