Right side: Nina Nelson (Topness Mark 1 pilot) looks out over Vimana station\u2019s hangar, tense with memories of the past.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Hangar in Vimana<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Mifune and his team are working on Second Sight, and Nina is watching them, grasping the parapet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Left side, chapter title: First Topness<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

One year earlier, a rainy day in London. Nina has just learned about the top secret NerfThis plan. (Interpreted by the manga author as \u201cNerfDis.\u201d)<\/p>\n

\u2022 One year ago. London, Cambridge University<\/span><\/p>\n

Rain is falling on the lawn. zoom-in on a window with rain flowing over it. Nina is sitting on a sofa in a reception room. On the other side of the room is a staff member of the United Nations Space Force (in black?). Nina reads the cover of a booklet in her hand.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina: “NerfThis?”<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Right side: An official informs Nina that the whale-shaped Mark 01 is based on her own customized ship in the global video game Star Sailor<\/em>, and the UN Space Forces are trying to build a space fleet that can fight Seireness.<\/p>\n

Left side: She is shocked to hear that the UN believes Seireness will strike again. \u201cTheir second coming wasn\u2019t stopped by the collapse of Deus. Humanity will be destroyed.\u201d He explains that the Star Sailor<\/em> game\u2019s purpose is to find the best space battleship pilots on Earth, who can qualify for Topness. He says she has a 99.5% probability of successfully activating the Mark 1.<\/p>\n

It’s a top secret document. She flips through it, and her eyes stop at a drawing of Mark 1. She raises her eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina: “This…?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Staff: “Yes, NerfThis Mark 1… that’s the ship you’re on.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina: “But this is from Star Sailor<\/em>…?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Staff: “Yes, it’s your ship. Star Sailor<\/em> is designed to find boys and girls from around the world who can qualify as Topness for the anti-Seireness fleet called NerfThis.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina: “Seireness…?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Staff: “We believe that Seireness will strike again, and if it does, it will destroy the human race. The U.N. Space Command is secretly building space battleships to fight Seireness. We’d like you to join the Topness.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina’s eyes widen, the documents held tightly in her hands. Mark 1 drawings, construction plans.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Right side: \u201cOf course, we\u2019ll respect your wishes. It is inevitable that this will be a very dangerous mission. But we want you to help save humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Left side: Later, Nina enters her game and talks to her dream whale. \u201cWhat should I do? I\u2019m scared\u2026but\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2022 Nina’s room<\/span><\/p>\n

Kingdom Animalia, Nina’s avatar standing alone in the aquarium. Nina staries at the screen of a mobile game.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina: “Hey? What should I do…”<\/span><\/p>\n

A silent dream whale. She hugs the game to her chest.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Right side: \u201c\u2026I want to protect him.\u201d She speaks of the boy who previously played the game with her, whose identity she doesn\u2019t know.<\/p>\n

Left side: At a later date, Nina has come to Vimana<\/em> in Jupiter orbit. She greets Topness manager Abby Yan, who thanks her for enlisting.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Vimana<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Nina walks down the hallway alongside the almost finished Mark 1. A bodyguard also walks in step with her. Nina’s expression is stiff. Abbey is walking ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abbey: “Nice to meet you. I’m Abbey Yan, Administrator of Topness. Thank you for joining Topness.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina’s face is stiff in contrast to Abbey’s smiling face. She shakes the hand offered to her.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina: “Where are the other Topness?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Abbey: “We’re searching for them now. You are the first.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina is a little surprised.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abbey: “You’ll be doing combat simulations here on Vimana<\/em>, and you’ll be learning the role of the Mark 1 in NerfThis.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina: “I’ve already experienced it in the game.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Abbey, uncomfortable: “Well I’m sorry for deceiving you\u2026”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina: “No, I’m here to save humanity.”<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Right side: Nina wants to meet the other members, but Abbey says she is the first. \u201cOur situation is that we don’t know when Seireness will attack. The NerfThis plan doesn’t allow a moment of grace. But it’s good to have you as the first fit. The Mark 01 is the cornerstone of data analysis to produce a tactical fleet. That’s why construction is being rushed\u2026until we accept another Topness we will assume every possibility in simulation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Left side: The assembled crew is shown secret footage of a monstrous Seireness, shot from the Deus<\/em> in the first invasion. They hear the voices of those on the spot: <\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone evacuate to the descent ship!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut deputy chief, there are still the space-time crystals\u2026!?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you want to die, you idiot? Let go of such things and run away!!\u201d<\/p>\n

Abbey takes the podium to give her explanation. \u201cThis is the enemy Seireness we have to fight against. Seireness use wormholes to jump across long distances in space. They seem to have come to our solar system.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Right side: Abbey says the Seireness use wormholes to jump long distances faster than light, a technology Earth can only dream of. Nina asks why such an advanced civilization would come so far to attack Earth, but the answer is unknown.<\/p>\n

Left side: Alexei eyes Carlos as Abbey lays out the mission. \u201cThe weapons currently possessed by the UN Space Forces and the space fleet equipped with them cannot deliver an effective blow to Seireness. Only attacks by NerfThis weapons using the inexhaustible energy created by the connection between the space-time crystals and Topness\u2026the NerfThis fleet is the only way humanity can oppose Seireness.\u201d<\/p>\n

An officer asks why they are entrusting their fate to children.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Right side: \u201cThe defense forces recognize the issue of imposing dangerous missions on underage children. We are currently advancing the generalization of space-time crystal connection technology. If we succeed in that generalization, by all means, you\u2019ll be the one on the front lines.\u201d<\/p>\n

As talk continues, Nina realizes that Topness is the last and only line of defense.<\/p>\n

In the background, someone asks if there are plans to mass produce space-time crystals.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe original space-time crystals disappeared with Deus. There is currently no high-energy particle accelerator facility capable of replicating them. The space-time crystals currently in human possession are the only eight copies that could be recovered. The NerfThis plan can only go up to Mark 8.\u201d<\/p>\n

Left side: We jump forward to a time when Nina is single-handedly running combat simulations with her controlling the entire Topness fleet. She\u2019s not doing well.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Right side: Mark 6 goes down in flames against the simulated Seireness.<\/p>\n

Left side: Abbey tries to console Nina, who says that the Mark 6 has been destroyed 49 times. Abbey says it\u2019s the most powerful ship they have, so it\u2019s naturally the enemy\u2019s first target. Nina protests that it\u2019s a death trap for whoever will end up as its pilot.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Simulation<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina running a simulation on a simulator (core ship?) Abbey staring at the screen, Vimana<\/em>‘s staff nearby. NerfThis ships other than Mark 1 are running in auto mode. Each ship’s popup is marked with AI. Mark 6 is dropped by Seireness. Abbey has a heavy expression.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abbey: “Nina, let’s take a break.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina: “No, continue.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Feedback is dropping. Heart rate and other vital values are also on the rise.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abbey: “You’re the center of the fleet. Each ship relies on your Second Sight, a tactic produced based on data coming up in real time, to conduct its operations. You have to be the calmest person in the fleet. We’re turning off the Simulator, Nina.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Muttering in the dark.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina: “My error in judgment will directly lead to the annihilation of the fleet.”<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Right side: Abbey acknowledges this sickening truth, but says there is no other solution. Nina should deal with it as an adult. Nina fumes that she will never become an adult. \u201cAll I have to be is the leader of Topness!! I will protect Topness!!\u201d A voice calls out to her\u2026<\/p>\n

Left side: \u2026and we are pulled back into the present as Marina yells to get Nina\u2019s attention. She and Aisha want to know why she\u2019s ignoring them and why she was making such an angry face. Nina tries to laugh it off.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Vimana<\/em> hangar<\/span><\/p>\n

Marina: “Nina!”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina looks up in surprise.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aisha: “What are you doing here? I went to my room to have dinner.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina: “Oh, uh… yeah. I was going to have dinner too.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Close on Marina.<\/span><\/p>\n

Marina: “You didn’t look like you wanted to eat, did you?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina: “Eh\u2026eh?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Marina: “You look really depressed.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Marina frowns. Aisha looks worried.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aisha: “What’s wrong? Do you want to talk to us?”<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Right side: Marina is suspicious of Nina\u2019s evasion. Aisha suddenly remembers seeing Nina sitting alone with Yu on a previous occasion and wonders if that\u2019s the reason for Nina to be preoccupied.<\/p>\n

Left side: Nina blasts them with denial, only making Marina more suspicious. \u201cI thought you were starting to look at Yu a little differently.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re talking nonsense!\u201d<\/p>\n

Marina: “Oh! Is it about your love life?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina: “No, it’s not!”<\/span><\/p>\n

Flashback: Aisha sees Yu and Nina sitting on the bench in the garden, joking.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aisha: “No way… Yu?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina is shocked.<\/span><\/p>\n

Marina: “Oh! Of course! I’ve noticed that you’ve been looking at Yu differently lately!”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina: “That’s not true! I’m the leader of NerfThis! I have a lot to worry about!”<\/span><\/p>\n

Aisha: “I’m sorry, but don’t keep it all to yourself. We’re here to help you.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Marina: “And give love advice!”<\/span><\/p>\n

She holds up her index finger.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina: “That’s not what I meant!”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina blushes. Something echoes in the hangar.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Right side: Yu suddenly appears. \u201cWhat\u2019s nonsense?\u201d Marina compliments him on his timing. Nina is stunned until Aisha steps in and asks about getting a meal. She talks with Yu about chawanmushi (savory egg custard) and they talk about whether it\u2019s best to eat it first or last.<\/p>\n

Left side: With the topic now shifted to dinner, Yu leads them away. Aisha scolds Marina for going over the line. \u201cAw, I was just having some fun\u2026\u201d and we find a Mifune android preparing their order.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Right side: The Topness pilots gather for a rare peaceful meal together.<\/p>\n

Left side: Nina gazes at Yu, lost in thought about how he miraculously turned out to be the boy she gamed with so many years ago. He\u2019d promised then that they would search the seas and catch a dream whale together. Now, in a way, they have. Her musings are roused when Yu suddenly shouts at Linne Aegis\u2026<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Right side: \u2026who has rudely scarfed his custard, saying he was letting it go to waste. He yells that he was saving it for last, like you\u2019re supposed to. This ignites a spat about calorie consumption.<\/p>\n

Left side: Linne chides Yu that he would be cuter if he got a little thinner, which only makes him madder. Someone else says they should just get married already. Marina is delighted.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Cafeteria<\/span><\/p>\n

Topness surrounding the table. Linne steals some inari from Yu’s plate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yu: “Oh! That’s my inari!”<\/span><\/p>\n

Linne casually throws it into her mouth.<\/span><\/p>\n

Linne: “I thought you didn’t want it because you didn’t touch it until the end.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Yu: “Inari is eaten last with steamed egg custard!”<\/span><\/p>\n

Linne: “Oh, really? I’m sorry.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Yu: “If you want to eat inari, why don’t you order it yourself?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Linne: “Because you’re so picky. Calories and nutrition. You don’t know how many calories your shield needs.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Flashback: Order machine says “calorie overload.” Linne’s scowls.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yu: “You’re messing up my calorie count!”<\/span><\/p>\n

Linne: “It’s okay, you’re cuter when you’re small.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Yu (with a dumbfounded look on his face): “Cute is not a compliment!”<\/span><\/p>\n

Hugo: “You guys are really close friends. Why don’t you get married?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina stops eating. Marina’s ears perk up and Aisha enjoys it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Linne: “Yu is so cute, you can marry me if you want.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Yu: “Absolutely not!”<\/span><\/p>\n

Yu quietly eats steamed egg custard. Marina smiles. Nina can’t stand Marina’s gaze and leaves her seat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Laine: “Oh, Nina, I was thinking of playing ping-pong with you after this.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina: “I have a meeting (briefing?) with Abbey.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Laine: “Oh, I see. It’s hard to lead the operations\u2026”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina: “It’s okay, I’m the leader of Topness.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina leaves carrying her tray. Aisha looks worried.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Right side: Laine asks Nina if she\u2019d like to go play table tennis, but she has to attend a briefing with Abbey. After al, she\u2019s the leader of Topness.<\/p>\n

Left side: Later, Nina stares at her dream whale in the old fishing game.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Nina’s room<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina is sitting on the bed with a toothbrush in her hand. Her hair is wet after a shower. She opens her game and activates her character.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina’s avatar: “Yu, I’m here.”<\/span><\/p>\n
