Space Battleship Yamato, The Final Chapter
Yamato in two pieces
The fourth film…will be the last
Space Battleship Yamato will finally be split in half! The Yamato series, which sparked a boom in theatrical animated films, is finally coming to its true end with the release of its fourth film this spring.
The series began with the explosive hit Space Battleship Yamato (1977), followed by Farewell to Yamato (1978) and Be Forever Yamato (1980) with the selling point of “This is the end” each time. However, each story ended with a scene of Yamato charging into battle or returning to Earth after a battle. Contrary to the announcement, the endings left the impression that another film would follow. Rival companies were usually particular about this point, continuing to make statements that could be interpreted as either mockery or attack, saying there were many “lasts.”
However, in the climax scene of the fourth film in the series, The Final Chapter (scheduled for release by Toei on March 19), the “unsinkable” Yamato is finally split in half by an enemy attack. Whether or not Yamato will become space junk after this is a secret until the film’s release. However, it is sure to be shocking scene for longtime Yamato fans.
